The Theory

The Alpha Drive is a clinical theory twenty years in the making.

It proposes that human behavior is organized around a single, continuous drive: the need to maintain the felt sense that our actions can actually change what happens next. You must maintain a sense of being in control

When that sense is intact, we function. When it drops, everything else follows.

That's not a metaphor. It's a mechanism — a specific regulatory loop that runs in every person shaping what we pay attention to, what we try, what we repeat, and what we abandon. The theory describes that loop in precise enough terms to explain why the same person can handle something easily on Tuesday and fall apart on Thursday. Why removing one behavior without addressing a lost sense of control just produces a different unwanted behavior. Why insight alone almost never changes anything.

The Alpha Drive framework doesn't replace existing psychology. It provides the organizing architecture that connects what we already know — from neuroscience to reinforcement learning to clinical observation — into a single, usable map.

Once you see the pattern, it's very hard to unsee.

My Story

I'm Lesa Warren. I was a clinical social worker for over 20 years and worked countless hours both in private practice and as an independent researcher. I was a therapist for adults, children, couples and families. I provided medical social work to patients and their families in every medical setting. I even provided forensic services to the courts in custody cases and as an expert witness. After seeing the full range of human behavior and emotion, I realized what I was doing wasn't helping enough - our profession had no cohesive theory that even explained it all.

The question was this: why do people keep doing things they know aren't working — even when they understand exactly what they're doing and why?

I studied it in my clients, in my colleagues' clients, and in the ongoing research and literature. Then I found the key - the same patterns, across completely different people, in completely different circumstances.

I spent twenty years mapping those patterns and following them back to the source. What I found was that they all converge on the same point: the system's estimate of whether its actions can produce meaningful effect - in other words, your sense of being in control of something. When that's stable, behavior is flexible. When that sense of control drops, the escalation sequence begins — and it's the same sequence in everyone whether you're dealing with anxiety or addiction, a failing marriage or a failing institution.

The Alpha Drive theory came together in the form of a book in 2025, after the worst period of my life. My husband Todd — the person who had been my mirror, my partner, half of myself for thirty years — had died from a brain tumor. I had the theory's basics and had said for years that I was going to complete and document it. I never had. But that summer, with everything falling apart around me, my focus locked onto the problem and wouldn't let go. Why? Because it gave me a sense of control in a life turned upside down.

Todd died on Thanksgiving, 2024. The book was finished in May 2026.

He knew about the theory for twenty years. He believed in it, and he always said I'd finish when the time was right.

As always, he was right. This one's for him.

What You'll Find Here

This website is where the theory lives -between the professional journal article and the book.

The blog takes individual concepts from the framework and makes them immediately usable — not as therapy, but as a lens. It's the kind of lens that makes behavior stop looking random and start looking predictable.

The 5-minute primer gives you the core model in plain language. Start there if you're new. New info pages and downloads will be added over time.

If you're a clinician, researcher, or just someone who thinks carefully about why people do what they do —

you're in the right place.

Know that I'm working feverishly to get the book ready for publication and get it into your hands. I want to get the word out about the Alpha
Drive to as many people as possible.

People need answers. They need help. They need relief. The Alpha Drive theory can provide that. Look around and see if there's anything you can use and pat yourself on the back - you're in the right place.
